IAPT Early Career Investigator Symposium 2023: Phylogenomics & Systematics in Brazil

The International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) supports scientific research and scholarship in the field of systematics, including the taxonomy and evolution of plants, fungi, and algae. IAPT has established a symposium series called the Early Career Investigator Symposium to highlight the research of botanists, mycologists, and phycologists. Each year, the symposium is presented at a different international conference where IAPT participates in the program. The specific theme changes from year to year, depending on the theme of the conference. The theme for our symposium at the LXXIII Congresso Nacional de Botânica (CNBot) in Belém was “Phylogenomics & Systematics in Brazil,” which fit quite well with the joint Conference with the Sociedade Botânica do Brasil (SBB)
This symposium showcased the diverse and innovative research in phylogenomics and systematics conducted by young Brazilian scientists currently working in national and international institutions, as well as by PhD students who were former IAPT grant recipients. Plant systematics studies, based on high-throughput sequencing, are advancing rapidly in Brazil, and we hope this symposium inspired the next generation of young scientists. Talks featured phylogenetic and evolutionary advances across all major clades of the plant tree of life. The symposium brought together researchers from diverse backgrounds and career stages that will hopefully foster collaborations that transcend geographical and disciplinary boundaries. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages networking, allowing participants to share their expertise and establish long-lasting collaborations.
